Bifolding doors

Bifolding doors fold back on themselves in a concertina and stack to one or both sides, so you can open up almost the whole width of the opening. Around 90 per cent of it is clear from inside to outside, which no other door type gets close to.

That is what makes them the choice when the aim is to genuinely join a room to the garden rather than just look out at it. On a summer evening the wall is simply not there.

Slimmer frames support larger panes of glass, and the frames are fully insulated, so a wall of glass does not cost you the heat in winter that older systems used to.

What to think about before you choose

Which way they stack, and how many panes

Panels can stack to one side or split both ways. Fewer, wider panes mean less frame in the view; more panes mean a smaller stack when they are folded back. The two pull against each other, so it is worth deciding which you care about.

The traffic door

One leaf can be specified to open on its own like an ordinary door, so stepping out to the garden does not mean folding the whole set back. On a door used daily rather than a few weeks a year, it is the difference between using it and not.

Threshold, weather and level access

A rebated threshold weathers best and is the sensible choice on an exposed elevation. A flush one is far better for wheelchairs, prams and furniture, and needs the drainage outside handling properly.
