Doors

French doors

French doors are a pair of doors that open from the middle, usually outwards on to a patio or garden. They bring a lot of light into the room behind and give a wide, clear opening with nothing standing in the middle of it when both leaves are open.

White French doors with lever handles and glazed panels to either side

They suit an opening that is wide enough for two doors but not wide enough to justify bifolds, which is a very common situation on the back of a house.

Both doors carry handles and both barrels are keyed alike, so one key does everything, and shoot bolts to both doors add security at the head and the sill.

What you get as standard

  • Handles on both doors and both door barrels keyed alike
  • Shoot bolts to both doors for added security
  • Boost the level of natural light in your home
  • Combines elegance and easy access into your home

Worth knowing

What to think about before you choose

Which leaf opens first

One door carries the handle and opens on its own; the other is held top and bottom by shoot bolts and opens when you want the full width. Which side that is should follow how the room is actually used, not which way the drawing happens to be printed.

Opening in or out

Outward opening keeps the floor space inside free and is the usual choice on the back of a house. Inward opening seals better against weather but needs the area behind the doors kept clear.

Widening the opening without widening the doors

Fixed glazed side panels either side give a much larger area of glass, and more light, for considerably less than a wider door set costs.
