Sliding patio doors
A sliding patio door runs on a stainless steel track, so it takes up no space at all when it is open. Nothing swings into the room and nothing swings out on to the patio, which is the whole point of it.
That makes it the right answer where furniture sits close to the opening, or where the patio outside is narrow. It also gives you a large fixed pane of glass even when the door is shut, so the view is uninterrupted.
Available in 2, 3 and 4 pane options, with standard, low and room divider threshold options depending on how level you need the transition to be.

What to think about before you choose
Which pane slides, and where it stacks
On a two pane door one leaf slides behind the other, so half the opening is ever clear. Three and four pane arrangements change both how much opens and which side the stack sits on, which is worth matching to how the room and the patio are laid out.
Thresholds
A standard track weathers best. A low threshold is easier underfoot, and a level one gives step free access but relies on drainage outside the door taking the water away.
The track wants sweeping
Grit in the bottom track is the usual reason a sliding door starts to feel heavy. A brush out every few months is very nearly the whole of the maintenance.
