Aluminium windows
Aluminium is far stronger than PVCu for its size, so the frame holding a given pane of glass can be much slimmer. In practice that means more glass, less frame and more light, which is why aluminium is the usual answer on large openings and contemporary properties.
It holds a powder coated finish for years without maintenance, and it will not warp or discolour. On the coast, where salt-laden air is hard on everything, that durability is worth having.
It costs more than PVCu, so it is worth being clear about where it earns the difference. On a big opening where sightlines matter it earns it easily. On a standard bedroom window it usually does not.

What to think about before you choose
The thermal break
A modern aluminium window has a polyamide break running through the frame, separating the outside from the inside. Without one, aluminium conducts heat straight through, which is what gave the aluminium windows of the 1970s their reputation for streaming with condensation.
Powder coat, and different colours each side
The finish is baked on rather than painted, and it can be one colour outside and another inside. Anthracite outside with white inside is the usual choice, and it costs very little more than a single colour.
Sightlines are what you are paying for
If you are weighing aluminium against PVCu, compare the frame width on a like for like opening rather than the price on its own. On a large opening the difference in glass area is obvious; on a standard bedroom window it is not.
