External cladding
External cladding covers a wall face in PVCu boarding. It is usually done for one of two reasons: to protect a wall that is taking a beating from the weather, or to change the look of an elevation that has aged badly.
On the Lincolnshire coast the first reason comes up often. A gable or a seaward-facing wall gets far more wind and rain than the rest of the house, and cladding takes that punishment instead of the wall behind it.
It also adds a layer of insulation, and unlike painted render or timber it does not need redoing every few years.

What to think about before you choose
What is behind it
Cladding covers a wall, it does not cure one. Anything wet, blown or failing behind it should be dealt with first, or it carries on quietly out of sight.
Board profile and direction
Shiplap, open V and vertical boarding all read very differently on the same wall. Vertical tends to suit a gable, horizontal a long elevation.
Colour and how it weathers
Foiled woodgrain finishes hold their colour far better than early PVCu did. Pale colours also move less in the heat than dark ones, which shows at the joints on a south facing wall.
